The Chicago Harbors are the largest municipally owned harbor system in the country with 10 beautiful harbors spread across the Chicago lakefront. The harbors are owned by the Chicago Park District and managed by Westrec Marinas.

We offer moorings in almost every size — mooring buoys from 25 to 50 feet and slips from 25 to 100 feet with several anchorages for even larger vessels. In addition to that, we provide daily launch ramps and overnight dockage for visiting boaters.

We get it. Applying for a mooring at the Chicago Harbors is kind of a personal thing. Where do you want to be? Do I need to wait? Can I order my favorite take out to my boat? (Answer: of course!) Below, we’ve streamlined the process to make applying for a mooring as easy as possible. Have questions? We’re always here to help.

How Does It Work?

The Chicago Harbors are governed by the Chicago Park District Code, including the process for new applicants and the Rules of Conduct.

New applications are processed throughout the year and are assigned after our existing customers have either renewed their current mooring or requested a transfer to a different location within the Chicago Harbors.

With priority given to existing customers, that is why some new applicants aren’t able to get their preferred location and may need to be placed on the new applicant waiting list. This is also why we advise: the quickest way to receive your preferred slip is to first accept an available mooring at a different location so you can transfer to your preferred slip (when it’s available) as an existing customer with priority.

STEP ONE

Determine the length of your boat.

Determine the length of mooring you qualify for by measuring your boat from the tip of your bow (include bow pulpit if you have one) to the stern of your boat (including any swim platform if applicable).

Your mooring fee is determined by whichever is longer: the length of your assignment or the length of your boat. Moorings must fit your boat. We unfortunately can’t assign you to a mooring that is shorter than the length of your boat.

Availability

ALL HARBORS INFO

Generally, we have 3 types of moorings available for boaters: slips, mooring buoys and star docks. The debate continues between boaters who prefer one or the other, here’s a summary:

Slips

We offer sizes between 25-100 feet. Boaters who choose slips like the convenience of their boat being tied to a dock. The majority of our harbors offer slips.

Mooring Buoys

We have mooring buoys between 25-50 feet at several, but not all, of our locations. Boaters who choose mooring buoys use tenders to ferry them from the shore to their boat and prefer both the peace and quiet (plus the affordability) this type of mooring provides.

Star Docks

These moorings bridge the gap between slips and mooring cans. Star docks offer the stability of a slip but are floating in the middle of a harbor and only accessed via tender. Boaters enjoy star docks as an affordable alternative to having a dock.
